Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax transports viewers into a fantastical landscape imagined by Dr. Seuss and vividly brought to life by Chris Meledandri and his acclaimed filmmaking team at Illumination Entertainment (Despicable Me). Directed by Chris Renaud (Despicable Me) from a screenplay adapted by Ken Daurio and Cinco Paul (Despicable Me, HOP, Horton Hears a Who) from the 1971 children’s classic, the film is an imaginative journey that begins in the town of Thneedville, where a boy searches for the one thing he knows will win the heart of his dream girl. But in order find it, he must discover the story of the Lorax, the often grumpy but loveable protector  of Truffula Valley, in an exciting adventure filled with comedy and heart that USA Today’s Claudia Puig calls, “The right blend of funny, silly, and sweet.”

My Thoughts:
I have been waiting for this movie to come out on DVD since it hit theaters. I grew up reading Dr. Seuss books and now I share them with my daughter. We have been reading the Lorax for a couple of reasons. The first is that I feel Dr. Seuss is a genius. He truly had a way with words and creating a world outside of ours that is fun, inviting, and enchanting. With characters that have huge personalities and may look a little strange, he appeals to minds young and old. The second reason is that the book is filled with important messages. Perhaps the most important of all... be kind to our trees because we need them.

So I was thrilled to have the chance to check out The Lorax on DVD! We settled in for a family movie night and my daughter put up a huge stink. She did not want to watch this movie. I decided to put it in anyway and see if she settled down. Well, within the first few minutes of the film you are brought into a happy town called Thneedville in a bustling musical number. A land with no trees where you inflate your bushes and buy your air. A land where when you swim in the water you come out glowing. A land where everyone is happy and they aren't even aware of what they are missing. Well, in that musical number my daughter became enchanted and her eyes were glued to the screen for the rest of the film. Thankfully there were a ton of bonus features at the end to keep the fun going even longer.

The entire family loved this movie! The characters were likable and some even adorable (I loved those little guys that looked like bears...especially the really chubby one). The story line flowed really well, even with switching between the past and the present to learn the story told by the Onceler. And the messages were powerful. The biggest message throughout the film is the importance of trees and how quickly and easily we can destroy our world by cutting them down and not replacing them. But there was also a message about the young boy, Ted, that one person really can make a difference. That one seed can change the world.

I would highly recommend this film for a fun family movie night. I think it will appeal to a nice range of ages, as y husband, my daughter, and myself were all fully engaged. My daughter has already requested a second screening tonight!

Yes, I wish our trees looked like that!
